The Stranglers were miles more professional than the Play in a Day Punks of the time. JJ Brunel's sound influenced Hooky in New order and certainly their prior sound of Joy Division. While Johnny Rotten was doing his Norman Wisdom impressions these older guys were perfecting their craft. I never thought that Punk was anything but moaning apart from the political Clash who I like a lot. Even Paul Weller did not consider the Jam as a Punk Band and neither do I. Punk's dead for a reason - it wasn't very good and not built to last but to be fair I thought Crass and the US Dead Kennedy's were very good compared to the contrived Sex Pistols.
They had top songs: I like peaches, nice n sleazy, golden brown, strange little girl etc. they had good songs in abundance.
What a fuckin out of tune badly mixed racket
Top 5 punk band for sure. JJ had a really unique bass sound didn't he. Memories of Fred Grainger who knocked the wall out of the basement of the Hope to make space for live gigs. R.I.P. Fred and Jet and Dave.
What is it the bass and keyboards always suck me into their songs
Brilliant! Saw Dr Feelgood at the hope
Hanging Around is one of the best songs ever!
Great band! Must have been quite an experience to see them playing in that small basement venue on Upper Street back in the day!
One of the greatest bands of their era. Nothing tops the moody magic of those first two albums.
Dave Greenfield lived 150 yards from me and I didn’t know until his funeral.
I loved being a young Stranglers fan, you didn't belong to any one cult, punk, mod, skin, whatever. You wore black before it became fashionable, and the Stranglers were genuinely scary, I know, my mate and I met them backstage, we turned up with a cute bleach blonde who JJ knew, she got a backstage pass on her tit, we helped the roadies untangle cables. But you were definitely in your own gang as a Straglers fan, plus they were 10 years older than us, we'd just left school, and would mention all these books and intellectuals which opened my mind up. Still sound great , and glad they were the first band I was a fan of.
Brilliant
I wonder what it was being filmed for? Brilliant
The band also played at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh at about this time. Although they had already charted, I suspect that they were still playing these relatively small gigs due to outstanding commitments.
Tremendous the stranglers… not one new wave band did anything near … down in the sewer.. some track that… magazine came a second close…they just got better and better… Hugh cornwell awesome solo
They were better than punk because they had a genius Dave greenfield progrock keyboard player giving the music something amazingly unique
Burnell on bass and Cornwell on vocals!
I saw many of these bands in 1977 at Roxy club Neal street 52 Earls court (if i still remember correctly). I was 15 in those days but had the opportunity to go often to London during WE
Brilliant bit of history 👍⚒️
Raw brilliant
Quality
What an energy!
The stranglers early stuff blew the plastic punks sex pistols outta the water!!! Fact
Crikey, what a bleedin' awful racket!
When somebody play the bass this way It rules… Got the sound And the notes And the attitude that carry the songs
Que lo vea el imbécil de Bruce Dick-inson
Way ahead of their time The made some amazing tunes This being one of em My fav Something better change Massive energy 👌
Their live music sounds exactly the same as their studio albums
Sorry how could i forget...R.I P. Jett Black and Dave Greenfield,Piers a.k.a.Chopper
So tonight I'm going to The Hope and Anchor to see Rattus inheritus a Stranglers cover band play . I will hear the smae songs. Wish I'd seen the Stranglers there. I didn't get into them until 78 really.
Saw them several times here at the Hope in 77; absolutely brilliant live gigs.
15 years old,Saw them do heroes on TOTP , brought the album ,discovered rock and roll. First 3 albums , play em all back to back never skip a track. Epic
Love the name tags!!
That boozer is down the road from where I live - only wished I had seen the Stranglers play live there - glad to see it still exists doing live music.
The Stranglers were an amazing band, fc internazionale a bunch of modderfakkers
The sound & tone of that bass 🎸🎸👌👌❤️❤️
Canadian bass monster Rob Wright of legendary Victoria B.C. jazzcore outfit NoMeansNo owes a lot to JJ Burnel.. somewhat ironic given NMN were quite a 'PC' type band, in stark contrast to the Stranglers.
Played this album on cassette until it wore out ! Brilliant 👍
I remember J J Burnel tried to burn down a packed Eric's in Liverpool. Unfortunately it was extinguished.
KILLER SONG ALERT, CRANK IT UP!!! FUNK YEAH!!!M.O'B
Came across this just now,i became 20 again
I wasn't able to catch live shows by all of my favourite bands but I did get to see the Stranglers TWICE when they blew through Toronto. I'm so glad for that!
Still the best bass player ever but fuck him for playing genocidal Israel.
Didn’t know about that 🫤
That Bass was the soundtrack to my youth.
The Fender Precision played with a pick close to the bridge....iconic bassline.
Brilliant cheers 👍🏆💥🎼🇬🇧
Two weeks beforee seeing these , I had seen Barkiey James harvest in the same city ,
One of the best outros to a song
Just saw a comment that they weren’t punk Because Jet was forty in 1977 , what has age got to do with it . Have the young Punks then stopped being punk now ?
Pure punk performance from all members of this genius band!
Sounds like a Wurlitzrr on the high notes.....
